As more and more states are enacting Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) that mandate the role renewable fuels will play in power generation, Norbridge has taken the lead in helping utilities and other energy industry participants in understanding the issues and implications of embracing these mandates. Our expertise in solid fuels, sourcing, bulk commodities transport and storage, and forest products and agricultural markets has formed the foundation for our biomass and renewable fuels client assistance efforts.
In early 2009 we internally funded a research effort to better understand the issues and challenges related to embracing biomass. In the spring and summer of 2009 we assisted a major North American utility in developing their fuels sourcing and in-bound transport and storage plans for large scale biomass conversion. In Sept. 2009, Lee Clair, the Norbridge Partner most involved in our efforts, gave a speech at the National Coal Transportation Association (NCTA) Fall Meeting in Denver, CO on the complexities of embracing biomass as a renewable fuel source. The issues covered are: how complex the biomass fuels choices are, the costs that need to be considered in a biomass conversion plan, and how biomass solutions can vary regionally.
